WR Edwards suffers hip pointer

ClevelandBrowns.com reports that stud WR Braylon Edwards suffered a hip pointer during an offseason training activity. He’s considered day-to-day and is expected to be fine.

CB Holly hurts his knee

ClevelandBrowns.com reports that CB Daven Holly suffered a “serious” knee injury in an offseason activity on Wednesday. Head coach Romeo Crennel said that he damaged both ligaments and cartilage in his knee while coming down awkwardly after jumping for a pass. He’s expected to have surgery on his knee on Friday.

Taylor could skip training camp

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano revealed after practice Wednesday that six-time Pro Bowl defensive end Jason Taylor will not be attending any of the teams’ activities throughout the summer, a move that appears to signal the end of his Dolphins’ career, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Sparano wouldn’t discuss details of this stunning revelation, but it’s clear that he and Dolphins vice president of football operations Bill Parcells have been unhappy with Taylor’s absence from the ‘voluntary’ offseason conditioning program while he completed his 10-week stint on the Dancing with the Stars television show. “I know that Jason is not going to be at any OTA’s,” Sparano said. “I know that Jason will not be at any minicamps. I know that right now Jason is not going to be at training camp.”

Beck works with starters

Dolphins QB John Beck, a 2007 second-round pick, was the quarterback who took most of the first-team snaps during the practice session Wednesday, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Josh McCown took the bulk of his snaps with the second team, and rookie quarterback Chad Henne primarily worked with the third stringers, which mostly featured rookies and longshot free agents. “Josh and I are splitting reps day-to-day, the first day I got to take it and the next day Josh did, so we’re going back and forth,” Beck said. “The first team wideouts are intermixed, that’s good because we get to throw to the guys we are going to throw to and getting work with those guys who are going to play.” The plan is for Beck and McCown to alternate repetitions with the first-team, allowing each to equally work with the same caliber of receivers.

Williams works with starters

The Dolphins tailback tandem of Ronnie Brown and Ricky Williams both carried the ball during Wednesday’s organized team activity and appear on pace to participate in July’s training camp, reports the South Florida Sun-Sentinel. Both tailbacks, which suffered season-ending injuries in 2007, worked with the first-team offensive line, but Brown had his participation limited during team drills that featured limited contact. However, Brown made sharp cuts on the surgically-repaired right knee he injured against the Patriots back in October. It generally takes nine to 12 months for an ACL injury to fully heal and he seems on schedule.

Smith says ankle is fine

Bucs TE Alex Smith caught two touchdown passes in his first professional game, but since that performance against Minnesota in 2005, nothing has come easy for him. Smith had 32 receptions for 385 yards and three touchdowns last season, ranking 26th among tight ends in catches. He severely sprained his ankle against Tennessee in Week 6 and played through pain last season. The Bucs signed free-agent tight ends Ben Troupe and John Gilmore, who will push Smith for playing time this year. Smith said he is not worried about his playing time, and he said his ankle is coming along fine. “My body feels good,” Smith said in the Tampa Tribune. “I feel like I came in this offseason at a lighter weight. I’ve been able to focus on getting better instead.”

Furrey, McDonald not as wanted

In 2006, Mike Furrey left St. Louis and joined his former coach, Mike Martz, in Detroit. The 6-foot, 205-pound wide receiver led the Lions — and NFC — with 98 catches. In 2007, Shaun McDonald left St. Louis and joined Martz in Detroit. The 5-10, 183-pound wide receiver led the Lions with 79 catches. Furrey finished third with 61. And now? It’s 2008. Martz has been fired and is in San Francisco. Furrey and McDonald have stayed in Detroit, and new offensive coordinator Jim Colletto has a different approach. What roles will Furrey and McDonald play? “I don’t think we’ll be as much of a focal point as we were in that offense,” McDonald said Tuesday in the Detroit Free-Press. “But I can definitely see where I’m going to fit in there and see some of the routes that they’ve got. It’s going to be a good year, I think.”
